The Breeze of the Day

Here is a mix of some perfect Sunday morning mellow tunes to start your day.

1. Aiden Moffett "Oh Men!" One half of the the brilliant Arab Strap, this solo release is thoroughly enjoyable.

2. The Beach Boys "Surf's Up" The best vocal harmonies ever as far as I'm concerned. There is a very peaceful quality to their 70s work, in my honest opinion.

3. Animal Collective "Winter's Love" This song always reminds me of the author Mark Helprin. To me, it's resembles the kind of music he would make if Helprin were a musician.

4. Bill Callahan "All Thoughts Prey To Some Beast" He's dropped the Smog moniker and released the best album of his career as far as I'm concerned. I love the lyrics to this one especially.

5. Bonnie Prince Billy "You Are Lost" This man never ceases to amaze me. I don't think he's ever released a record that I truly just didn't like.

6. Christina Carter "In Prisoned Body" I love her voice and how weird her style is on this piece. I've always been a fan of the Charlambides but this release really saw her stretch compositionally.

7. Alela Diane "Dry Grass and Shadows" The most amazing voice I have heard in a long time. This one reminds me quite a bit of home.

8. Devendra Banhart "Owl Eyes" This one is for Tamara. She has an obsession with Owls and I love how weird Devendra is on this song.

9. Elliott Smith "I Better Be Quiet Now" Elliott Smith has always pretty much rendered me speechless in it's beauty.

10. Opeth ""Benighted" This is from "Still Life" and this is one of my favorite songs by them. It's totally Ren Faire core.

There Will Be Sound

The first of two mixes that I will be posting today. I decided to make a normal blog mix and then make a "mellow" one that I will post right after this one.

Tracklist:

1. Astra "The Dawning of Ophiuchus" This is a great band from San Diego that are definitely taking the 70s Prog sound to the 21st Century. I am very impressed with their debut record from Rise Above records.

2. Adam Ant "Ant Music" One of the most gifted musicians of the 80s who seems to get attention now and again. One of the catchiest choruses in a song I have ever heard.

3. Big Black "Bazooka Joe" There is nothing like a little dirt in your day, spewed forth by the misanthrope-in-chief, Steve Albini.

4. Birchville Cat Motel "White Petal Carpet" I love this dude's guitar work. I have been jamming this dude's stuff for quite a while.

5. Boy's Life "Golf Hill Drive" This song was the soundtrack for most of the duration of time that I lived in Lubbock. I was obsessed with the record this song appears on. I think this is one of the few "emo" bands from the 90s that actually still holds up very well today.

6. CPC Gangbangs "Gone Black" Some very disturbed Canadian Garage Rock that I love.

7. Aavikko "Syntaksis" I've mentioned these guys a lot recently and I can't tell you enough how awesome I think they are. If you come across these guys on your adventure out to the record store, you should definitely purchase this.

8. Dead Can Dance "Ullyses" This is by far my favorite track on DCD's "The Serpent's Egg".

9. Depeche Mode "I Feel You" This is one of those songs that just makes you nod your head and go "yep" and nothing more. I think the album this song comes from is grossly underrated. "Songs of Faith and Devotion" is still one of my favorite records.

10. Juliana Barwick "Anjos" This is truly beautiful and she mostly makes her songs with a small keyboard, a looper station and primarily her voice. Some of the most original work I've ever heard.
